Many of us take our ability to see for granted – until our vision changes. If you are nearsighted (have myopia) and also find it difficult to read up close, you may be experiencing both myopia and presbyopia. Although these are two distinct eye conditions, they can coexist and often become more noticeable as we age.
What is Myopia?
Myopia, also known as nearsightedness, is an eye condition where nearby objects appear clear, but objects farther away appear blurry. Myopia typically develops in childhood and can result in symptoms such as blurry distance vision, squinting, headaches, and eye strain. The prevalence of myopia is rising worldwide, particularly in Eastern Asia, and increased screen time is believed to be a contributing factor. The causes of myopia have also been well studied.
What is Presbyopia?
Presbyopia is an age-related condition that affects the eye’s ability to focus on close-up objects. As we grow older, the lens inside the eye becomes less flexible, making it harder to read small print or see things clearly up close. Common signs of presbyopia include holding reading material at arm’s length, experiencing eye strain while reading, or finding it difficult to see in dim lighting.

Managing Myopia and Presbyopia
Both myopia and presbyopia can be managed with proper eyewear. Reading glasses or multifocal lenses (which support vision at multiple distances) can correct both conditions. However, as presbyopia progresses, your usual glasses may not provide the same level of vision correction. The combination of myopia and presbyopia can be frustrating, often requiring two different pairs of glasses. Multifocal lenses offer a convenient solution, helping you see clearly at various distances without needing to switch eyewear constantly.
Take Action for Your Eye Health
Having both myopia and presbyopia does not mean your vision is destined to worsen. With the right corrective lenses and smart lifestyle changes—such as managing your screen time—you can keep your vision clear and comfortable. Regular eye exams and the appropriate eyewear are key steps for managing these common vision issues.
Both myopia and presbyopia are manageable with the right attention and vision correction. Don’t hesitate to consult your eye care professional for advice on the best solutions for your unique eye health needs.
