Dr Tsiang Ung, consultant ophthalmologist

Myopia Focus is delighted to welcome Dr Tsiang Ung BM (Southampton), FRCOphth (London), to its Advisory Committee.

Dr Ung is a UK-trained consultant ophthalmologist with a special interest in eye longevity and myopia control. She brings extensive clinical experience from both the UK and South East Asia, where she regularly manages children experiencing rapid and complex myopia progression.

Having completed dual subspecialty fellowships in paediatric ophthalmology and oculoplastic surgery, Dr Ung moved to Southeast Asia in 2012. She now practises privately at a tertiary referral specialist eye centre, treating complex eye disease referred from across the region. She also remains actively involved with the Royal College of Ophthalmologists in London as an examiner for the College examinations.

A clinical focus on myopia control

Dr Ung’s interest in myopia control developed directly from her clinical work. Practising at the epicentre of the region’s myopia epidemic, she sees first-hand the impact that aggressive myopia progression can have on children and their families.

Her work focuses on translating the latest clinical evidence into practical, individualised patient care, including the use of multimodality myopia management strategies. She lectures widely to ophthalmologists and optometrists and is a strong advocate for closer cooperation between different eye care professions to improve the delivery of myopia care.

Welcoming Dr Ung

Welcoming Dr Ung to the committee, Jason Higginbotham said:

“We’re absolutely delighted to welcome Tsiang to the Myopia Focus Advisory Committee. She brings a wealth of clinical experience, particularly from South East Asia, where the scale and impact of childhood myopia are already impossible to ignore. “Tsiang’s experience of treating children with aggressive myopia progression, together with her understanding of multimodality treatment strategies, will bring an extremely valuable perspective to the committee. Just as importantly, she shares our belief that ophthalmologists, optometrists and the wider eye care community need to work more closely together if we are going to improve awareness and ensure that more children receive appropriate myopia care.”

Dr Ung said:

“I am delighted to join the Myopia Focus Advisory Committee. Myopia is one of the most significant eye health challenges facing children across Asia and increasingly around the world. We have a growing body of evidence and an expanding range of management options, but there remains an urgent need to translate that knowledge into consistent, accessible care. “I look forward to supporting Myopia Focus in helping parents better understand myopia, while also encouraging closer cooperation across the eye care professions.”

Professional roles and memberships

Dr Ung’s professional roles and memberships include International Advisor to the Myopia Society of Singapore, committee member of Malaysia Advocacy for Myopia Prevention and the Malaysian Paediatric Ophthalmology Group, founding member of the Malaysian Oculoplastic Interest Group, and member of the Asia Pacific Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
