Editorial & Medical Review Policy

Myopia Focus helps parents understand childhood myopia (short-sightedness) and the treatments that can slow it. Because this information affects decisions about children's eye health, every health page goes through the process below before it is published, and at least once a year after that.

Who writes our content

Our clinical content is written by registered eye care professionals, led by co-founder Jason Higginbotham, BSc (Hons) MCOptom, an optometrist and dispensing optician with over 30 years' experience. Some articles are written by guest contributors who are practising optometrists, ophthalmologists or researchers; each article shows its author and links to their profile. Articles about family experiences of myopia are written by parents and are labelled as personal stories, not medical advice.

Who reviews it

Every page about the causes, diagnosis or treatment of myopia is reviewed by a GOC-registered optometrist or a GMC-registered ophthalmologist from our Advisory Committee before it is published. The reviewer checks that:

  • the information is accurate and reflects current evidence and UK professional guidance

  • claims about how well a treatment works are supported by published studies

  • risks, side effects and limitations are described fairly

  • the page is clear for parents and does not replace advice from their own eye care professional

The reviewer's name, qualifications and the date of the review appear at the top of each page.

How often we review

We review every health page at least every 12 months, and sooner when significant new evidence, product approvals or professional guidance are published. The “Last reviewed” date shows when a page was last checked.

How we choose sources

We base our content on peer-reviewed research published in recognised journals, systematic reviews, and guidance from professional and regulatory bodies such as the College of Optometrists, the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, the World Health Organization and the International Myopia Institute. Sources are listed at the end of each page, with links where available.

Products and treatments

When we describe specific lenses, contact lenses or eye drops, we aim to present each option fairly, including its evidence, cost and limitations. We do not accept payment to feature or rank products.

Our funding and independence

Myopia Focus is supported by Occuity Ltd, a UK company that develops eye-care technology. Occuity has no editorial control over our clinical content, and our reviewers are independent clinicians. We also partner with Treehouse Eyes in the US to help families find specialist myopia care. Partners have no say over our clinical content.

Medical disclaimer

The content on Myopia Focus is for general information. It is not a substitute for an eye examination or advice from a qualified eye care professional who knows your child.

Corrections and feedback

If you think something on our site is inaccurate or out of date, please email info@myopiafocus.org. A clinician will review the issue and we will update the page if needed, noting the date of the change.
