New UK Study Highlights Barriers to Myopia Management Uptake
Myopia Focus Advisory Committee member, Neema Ghorbani-Mojarrad, alongside researchers at the University of Bradford, recent published the study, Perceptions and Barriers to Accessing Myopia Management in the UK, has shed light on the challenges parents face in initiating myopia management (MM) for their children. The research, employing both focus groups and surveys, reveals a significant gap in parental awareness and understanding of myopia and its management options.
Key Findings:
Limited Awareness: Many parents lack sufficient information about myopia and MM interventions.PubMed+1PMC+1
Communication Gaps: Parents often feel they haven't received explicit advice regarding their child's diagnosis or treatment options.PubMed
Lifestyle Factors Recognized: Despite limited clinical guidance, some parents are aware that lifestyle choices, such as increased outdoor activity, can influence myopia progression.
Quality of Life Concerns: There is a common belief among parents that myopia can adversely affect their child's quality of life.
These insights underscore the necessity for Eye Care Professionals (ECPs) to enhance communication strategies, ensuring parents are well-informed about myopia risks and management options.
The Role of ECPs in Addressing Barriers
ECPs are pivotal in bridging the information gap identified in the study. By proactively discussing myopia risks, management strategies, and the importance of early intervention, ECPs can empower parents to make informed decisions. Tailored communication that considers individual family concerns and lifestyles can significantly improve the uptake of MM interventions.
Upcoming Opportunity: Myopia Summit 2025
To further explore strategies for enhancing parental engagement in myopia management, ECPs are encouraged to attend events such as the Myopia Summit 2025. This event will provide a platform to discuss the latest research, including the aforementioned study, and to develop practical approaches for clinical practice.PMC
